But unlike the early 2000s, this revival isn’t just about the look. Today’s nostalgia is shinier, bolder, and powered by formulations designed to perform.

At Avenir, we chose Y2K as the theme for our first ANZ Roadshow earlier this month because we believe it’s more than a fun throwback. It’s a powerful framework for developing next-generation products: playful aesthetics combined with lightweight textures, skin health benefits, hair resilience and sustainable performance.


Why Y2K Matters for Today’s Formulation

The “20-year nostalgia cycle” means consumers are once again embracing the spirit of the early 2000s, but their expectations have changed. Where heavy glosses and sticky gels once defined the era, today’s buyers want cosmetic ingredients and finished products that are comfortable, multifunctional, and supportive of skin and hair health.

Y2K also provides a natural storytelling platform. It allows brands to connect cultural touchpoints like rhinestones, shimmer and bold colour with cutting-edge cosmetic science. It shows that beauty can be fun, innovative and responsible all at once.


How Our Suppliers Brought the Theme to Life

Throughout the seminars, our five supplier partners - Cargill, Lucas Meyer, Kahl, IOI and Ikeda - showcased how their unique ingredients and formulations can reimagine Y2K trends for today’s market.

And across all four events, our partner IFF brought an olfactory dimension to the theme. The Y2K era was big on body mists, a trend making a huge comeback today and fragrance remains a powerful way to connect nostalgia with modern beauty launches.

Together, our suppliers presentations highlighted that Y2K isn’t about going backwards. It is about taking inspiration from the past and reformulating it for the future with smarter, lighter and more sustainable solutions.



Bringing Y2K Energy Into the Room

The Y2K theme didn’t just stay on the slides. We wove it through the experience with themed quizzes, quick activities and small giveaways. These moments of fun kept energy high while connecting trends to formulations. Customers left not only with insights but also with a strong sense of how playful nostalgia and scientific innovation can work hand in hand.
