You may have noticed the word ‘adaptogens’ when browsing nutraceuticals and functional food and drinks products or even cosmetic product!
Have you wondered what this term actually means?
Adaptogens are mostly plants (or some mushrooms) that must tick the following boxes:
✅ Non-toxic
✅ Have ‘non-specific’ activity and act by increasing resistance of the organism to a broad spectrum of adverse biological, chemical and physical factors.
✅ Help regulate or normalise organ and system function within the organism.
✅ Work on a cellular level, acting to help prevent stress-induced damage.
Whilst adaptogens cannot replace the foundations of a healthy nutritious diet and lifestyle, this definition of adaptogens helps explain why these ingredients are looked to for their use in prevention and treatment of conditions such as anxiety, depression, immune dysfunction, CFIDS, sleep disorders, exhaustion and stress-induced ageing. Living in a fast-paced and high stress society as well as going through a pandemic, it’s no wonder adaptogens continue to be popular ingredients.
Adaptogens include ginseng, ashwagandha, schisandra, rhodiola and cordyceps.
